Pros and cons of CGI proxy script
What are the pros and cons of CGI proxies in your opinion?
Here is what I feel Pros 1] Fastest 2] Compatible with more websites as it supports javascript and flash Cons 1] Shared proxy hosts don't allow it 2] High resource usage |

RE: Pros and cons of CGI proxy script
You've nailed it on the head pretty good. CGI Proxy is pretty dated now, for the fact that Glype is just a better choice now. The resource usage is just too much to run on a low budget host and the fact you want a network of proxies, you're better off using Glype.

But Glype just hasn't gone forward after 1.1 and the sale of the script. The new owner has promised Glype 2.0 (Again), but frankly I don't trust him to deliver anything substantial.

A advantage of Glype though is Glype Manager which make creating a decent size network easy and on the fly. When did he promise Glype 2.0 again? Is it posted on the main website or forum?

I don't have much hope of seeing it though, given the new owner's apparent disinterest in the script. |

Pretty much what you've just stated, but I, along with another friend of mine always tweaked our CGI Proxy's so that the resource usage was to a minimum and it worked out for us just fine. Although the resource usage on a un-touched CGI Script is very high, I have seen the load of a server go to 14-15 and the proxy only had around 20-30 visitor's on at once. |

Even one proxy user abusing the proxy by downloading very large files or sending lots of spam email and such, can bring the whole server down. |

Indeed, which is why it is very important to always choose the right script and to host the proxy on a powerful server. I ran my proxy network on this server and did just fine; Inter Dual Quad Core 2.00 Ghz 8 GB DDR2 Ram 2x 250 GB HDD 2000 Premium Bandwidth 100 MBPS Uplink Port CentOS 5 cPanel/WHM + Fantastico + other features The cost of server was $210 / Month (Special Deal) |
